Why SEO Matters

SEO is a powerful tool business owners can implement on their websites to help them show up in keyword searches organically on popular search engines like Google or Bing. We’ve put together the top things you need to know before implementing SEO strategies for small business.

When we say “organic” search, we mean that you have set things up on your site in a way so that your website comes up when someone searches for your business name using the keywords you want to be associated with your offerings. ‘Organic search’ and ‘organic traffic’ are what happens without you having to pay for anything. For example, if you sell luxury headphones then you’d want your business name along with keywords like “luxury headphones” to show up when someone searches for those terms.

As important as it is to know what SEO is, it’s important to know what it is not. SEO is not paying for traffic or scamming anyone. It’s not shady and therefore, you shouldn’t expect to see results right off the bat. It’s a legitimate free strategy you can implement with results appearing in a minimum of 6 month’s time.

The best part about getting your site SEO compliant is that users trust organic search results versus paid search results (which this post is not about) and the entire strategy is free to implement. Think about it – how many times have you clicked on a link in Google which showed up as an ad?

This is not to say that nobody clicks on ads in Google search results but when people get on Google, their intent is usually to do research rather than to buy while the intent of companies who have ads up are to make a sale. After all, when you click on that ad link, the company has to shell out money (Something known as PPC or Pay-Per-Click). As a user doing research and depending on what article you stumble upon, you have a higher chance of being redirected to a recommended website to buy rather than choose one of the companies that appeared as an ad in your search results.

Being SEO compliant also forces you to really strategize, first by figuring out everything about your ideal client and next, so you can effectively reach them with the right keywords. Once you begin showing up in search rankings, it creates multiple online touchpoints for your ideal customers to be able to find and interact with you.

SEO Strategies For Small Business

When you implement an SEO strategy, it’s not just for showing up on Google. If done effectively, your business will appear in other important places your target market are searching on such as YouTube, Amazon, Pinterest, Yelp, Linkedin, Trip Advisor, etc.

The main part of your SEO strategy for small business or blogs revolves around regularly creating high-quality content on your website, such as blog posts that aren’t spammy. You’ll want to ensure your site includes keywords your target market are regularly searching for. They must be used in a realistic way throughout, otherwise, search engines can tell what you are trying to do and will not help you rank in search results. The other important part of your strategy includes going into the code of the site and adding your keywords into the title tags, meta descriptions, header tags, image names, and all HTML snippets. WordPress has one of the best-rated plugins for this called Yoast SEO which should help you optimize each of your blog posts for SEO.

In order to determine the best keywords for your website, think like your customer. What words are they searching for to try to find your product or service? Using a long format of keywords called long-tail keywords will give you better results because there’s less competition. For example, if you sell those luxury headphones, the likeliness that you would show up for the search term “headphones” isn’t really possible because you have large companies with large budgets for ads and SEO competing for that keyword. If you added in a few specific words related to your target market such as, “large pink luxury headphones” you would be getting closer to actually being able to show up in related search results for someone searching for those terms.
