Lots of people seem to think that hiring a business coach is the secret sauce to a super successful online business. (say that three times fast). Well, I agree that sometimes it can be but it can also be a very expensive mistake if you haven’t thought it through properly beforehand.
Here are the 3 things that you NEED to know before hiring a business coach.
1 – Are You Actually Going To Get The Thing Done?
If you’re hiring a business coach because you haven’t been able to do the executable action on your own and you’re expecting that the coach will be able to magically help you get the thing done, then you are going to be disappointed.
Hiring a coach does not guarantee results.
The only thing that guarantees results is you putting in the hard work and taking action to get the thing done. And yes, sometimes that can be quicker and easier with a coach supporting you, but not always. So ask yourself this – if you don’t hire a business coach, are you still going to get the thing done? If the answer is yes then go ahead and hire a coach to help you get it done in a more professional way, or faster, or more confidently or without making mistakes. But if the answer is no then you really need to decide why you are hiring someone to make you do the thing that you know you’re not going to do anyway.
2 – Do You Know Where EXACTLY In Your Business You Need Support?
Hiring a business coach to help you with your BUSINESS is pretty much guaranteed to fail. Because the word BUSINESS is too vague. Do you need help with your marketing or sales? Are you struggling to put together a strategy for your business growth? Do you want help with social media or funnels? Are you hoping to get direction around your cash flow and budgeting?

Look for coaches that specialize in the specific area that you need help with. A BUSINESS coach may be amazing at strategy and breaking things down into manageable chunks but they won’t be able to give you the amount of help you need with something as specific as social media strategy, for example.
3 – When Hiring a Business Coach, Are You Expecting the Relationship to Succeed or Fail?
If you’re going into a coaching relationship with the thought in your mind that “if this doesn’t work, I’ll just get a refund and move on” then you need to stop and go back to doing what you were doing before having thoughts of hiring a business coach. Because that kind of attitude is not going to help anyone.
You need to be going into it feeling positive and KNOWING that it is the right thing for you. Not already planning your exit if or when it starts to feel uncomfortable. Because it will start to feel uncomfortable… if your coach is any good, that is. A coach isn’t there to just chat with you and reinforce what you already knew.
So if you are considering hiring a coach for your business then GREAT. Just think it through, understand what a business coach’s role actually is, and make sure you are doing it for the right reasons and not because you are hoping it will be a magic bullet to fix whatever problems you think you have in your business.
